While utilizing a Valentine’s Day theme, first-grade teachers at McVey Elementary School designed lessons that bridged both literacy and math curriculum. During these creative units, that reflected New York State first grade Common Core State Standards for literacy and math, the students completed tasks in three separate centers that highlighted writing, word choice, graphing, counting and sorting. At the “Valentine Love Bugs” station, students designed “love bug” headdresses. On their creations, students wrote a description of their bug, while utilizing a number of adjectives that they had brainstormed. At another center, students created acrostic poems based on the word “love.” The students then glued their poem to a heart to give to a loved one. At the final station, students sorted “Sweethearts Candies” by color and subsequently graphed their results. The students were also given math problems to complete, which were all centered on a Valentine’s Day theme.
