The district is pleased to announce that W.T. Clarke High School student Stefanie Kaufman is the recipient of the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award. Stefanie initiated “Project LETS” (Let’s Erase the Stigma), an educational program designed to spread awareness about mental illness, while addressing suicide prevention. She is currently working with Congress to establish a state-mandated program for teachers who will be trained every year on issues related to both of these societal problems. Stefanie also provides workshops and lectures to regional organizations. Stefanie explained her motivation for starting Project LETS, “There is a real lack of awareness and programs in America that address mental illness and suicide.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award is distributed to individuals and groups dedicated to the service of others. This prestigious award is granted by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. It was created to thank volunteers who, by their demonstrated commitment, serve as an example to others. In addition to her volunteer services, Stefanie is the school’s student government vice president. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and the art, math and science honor societies. She is an avid soccer player who still finds time to coordinate a school poetry anthology. In the fall, Stefanie looks forward to attending Brown University, where she intends to study neuroscience and literary arts.
