Learning how to research a topic and communicate the information in a coherent manner is an important high-level skill for all students. At Parkway Elementary School, fifth grade students in Larry D’Angelo’s class recently utilized their research and writing abilities as they studied civil rights legends. Through their investigation of important figures such as Hank Aaron, Ruby Bridges and Harriet Tubman, the class acquired valuable information that indicated how these legends’ societal contributions are still relevant today.
The students were instructed to research their legendary figures using primary and secondary resources. Each student created guiding questions based on their research. They then paraphrased this newly obtained information and developed a research report with an illustrated cover.
The students were then divided into small groups. While each report was presented, group members became motivated and engaged listeners, as they jotted down notes and significant information. To summarize, the group collectively discussed the facts contained in each report.
“This assignment is part of Expeditionary Learning,” Mr. D’Angelo explained. “The students focused on the writing of a complete report on a topic of interest, internalized important research and presentation skills, and became motivated and engaged listeners.”
