As part of Barnum Woods Elementary School’s Parents as Reading Partners program, sponsored by the school’s PTA, author Joyce Raimondo visited kindergarten classes to conduct visual literacy workshops where students identified, analyzed and interpreted illustrations from different children’s stories. Students observed slideshow presentations featuring illustrations from a variety of stories, including “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Curious George.” They were encouraged to observe illustrations, pay close attention to detail and articulate their ideas based on their interpretations of the images. Students then worked in groups to create their own stories using paper cutouts of animals, buildings and people. The workshops are designed to help students develop critical thinking, language and observation skills. The lessons also promote social-emotional learning and character education.
