During a recent end-of-year awards ceremony, hundreds of elementary and secondary students in the district were honored for excellence in music and art.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo, who highlighted the students’ many achievements over the course of the school year. Selected students from each of the district’s nine schools were bestowed with humanitarian awards for their strong character, leadership, benevolence and good will throughout the school year.
Afterward, students who excelled in the arts and music were honored. A total of 293 music and art awards were presented to students. As their names were called in their respective categories, the students lined up on the risers and were officially recognized.
Music highlights included:
• Eleven student-musicians were selected as All State musicians for the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, New York. One student was named an alternate. • Twenty-nine student-musicians were selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association festivals. • A total of 153 student-musicians attended the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival at LIU Post.• Two student-musicians performed with the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Symphonic Orchestra at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.• Four student-musicians were selected to attend the prestigious National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Division Conference in Providence, Rhode Island.
Art highlights included:
• Sixty-six student-artists participated in the Art Supervisors Association All-County Art Exhibition. • Twelve student-artists were selected to participate in the Long Island Art Teachers Association Art in Heart Exhibition.• Thirteen student-artists participated in the Olympics of the Visual Arts.• The works of two student-artists were displayed in the New York State Art Teachers Association Legislative Student Art Exhibit.
