W.T. Clarke Middle School students Naman Shakrani and Nicole Artoglou are the first- and second-place winners, respectively, of the school’s 2013 spelling bee. Naman, who correctly spelled “philodendron,” will now advance to the regional competition of the Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University. Prior to the bee, the middle school students were tested, and 27 qualified as finalists. The intense seven-round competition lasted approximately one hour, until the winner was named. When asked the secret to his success, Naman explained that he pictures the word in his head before spelling it. “I ask my parents and my brother to keep quizzing me,” he added. “I also ask for all of the information about the word, even if I know how to spell it already.” The following students qualified as finalists in the school’s spelling bee: Nicole Artoglou Bryanna Bell Gabrielle Breviario Aristyne Diaz Nicholas Dornheim Caitlin Eng Jean Estupinan Devin Finneran Shayan Huda Brandon Hungria Vincent Joaquin Justin Kersh Lauren Lorusso Matt Louie Jonathan Melkun Abby Pineda Hassina Rasuli Alyssa Roberts Gabriella Rothberg Ethan Scherer Anthony Schilt Aashini Shah Eshan Shakrani Naman Shakrani Derek Smith Joshua Zirkel Mirian Zuniga
