Students at Woodland Middle School left their comfort zones during lunchtime and socialized with unfamiliar peers during the school’s annual Mix It Up Day. The event, hosted by the Social Emotional Literacy Committee, encourages students to meet new people and develop new friendships.
The theme for Mix It Up Day was “Music Is the Universal Language of the Soul.” During lunchtime, sixth- and seventh-grade students were seated according to musical genres, including pop, holiday, country, Disney, hip-hop, rock acapella, showtunes, rap, jazz, classical and 70s music. At their assigned tables, students worked collaboratively to guess the number of gumballs in a jar and played “Name That Tune.” Additional games and continuous raffles took place throughout lunchtime.
All eighth-grade students participated in a number of team-building activities throughout the day, including the formation of a pipeline around the school’s hallway. Students had to work together to keep the pipeline intact so that marbles could travel on it around the school.
Woodland Middle School has previously been recognized for its efforts to foster respect and understanding among students. The Teaching Tolerance Organization named the school a Mix It Up Model School. The district commends Woodland administrators, teachers and all those who assisted in encouraging students to participate in the annual event.
