Students at Parkway Elementary School reveled in an interactive presentation of magical tales given by Dr. Jeri Burns and Barry Marshall, otherwise known as the Storycrafters. Using a variety of techniques to orally present stories and images, the duo delighted the students with Diane Wolkstein’s Haitian folktale of “Tipingee”, while comparing it to the popular fairy tale “Cinderella.” The students collaborated with the Storycrafters to retell an original story of a cooking pot which was left in the backyard during the winter. Mr. Marshall engaged the students in this tale by having them practice their language skills by continually repeating the names of creatures who tried to make the pot their home by cramming into its small space. During this special presentation, the students were also exposed to tools of language, gesture, expression and tonality, as ways to express themselves when creating their own stories.
