Art reflected the words of poets as intricately designed and colorful dragons hung on the wall of McVey Elementary School’s main hallway. Under the direction of art teacher Cheryl Safren, the students combined their studies of poetry to concoct fanciful designs of literary creatures through a new art medium.
The fifth-grade art students studied poems about dragons and were instructed to circle the descriptive words in each poem. Using the descriptive terms, each student then drew his or her version of a dragon on paper and transferred the image to tooling metal using a wooden stylus. The recessed part of the newly transferred image was colored with a special marker for metals, giving the artwork the appearance of stained glass. The poems were also posted with the dragon display to add depth and meaning to the artwork. “Not only did the students learn a new art skill, they gained further appreciation for the language of poetry,” Ms. Safren stated. “This unit is an example of how we can combine art with English language arts. The result is a colorful and fun display of our work.”
