At the monthly Board of Education meeting on January 20, a curriculum presentation was given by faculty members and students from Woodland Middle School. The presentation was a snap shot of the various Social Emotional Literacy (SEL) activities that take place at the school.
Students and faculty described a number of the activities that the students partake on a regular basis. The impetus for the SEL activities comes from research that indicates students learn better in an environment in which they are safe and nurtured. As a result, lessons have been designed across all curriculum areas to implement these strategies.
The activities which were highlighted included Rachel’s Challenge “Mix It Up Day,” The Ryan Halligan Story, and Pay It Forward, to name just a few. The presentation concluded with a video depicting the presentations, assemblies and student reflections. The faculty participants were Assistant Principal Patricia Graham, sixth-grade teachers Claire Green and Allison Fullam, and social worker Laura Silvestri. The students who took part were Taylor Anthony, Victoria Bova, Gina Bova, Emily Dessel, Max Hechtman, and Joe Pesce.
