W.T. Clarke Middle School students Naman Shakrani and Nicole Artoglou are the first- and second-place winners, respectively, of the school’s 2013 spelling bee. Naman, who correctly spelled “philodendron,” will now advance to the regional competition of the Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University.
Prior to the bee, the middle school students were tested, and 27 qualified as finalists. The intense seven-round competition lasted approximately one hour, until the winner was named.
When asked the secret to his success, Naman explained that he pictures the word in his head before spelling it. “I ask my parents and my brother to keep quizzing me,” he added. “I also ask for all of the information about the word, even if I know how to spell it already.”
